Mountains of Troms

Towering peaks, narrow valleys, shining glaciers and gushing rivers; mountains are everywhere in Troms. The coastal mountains rise hundreds of metres from the ocean. Mighty summits protect the green pastures along the fjords. In the broad inland valleys, the mountains are clad with birch forests. The highlight, though, are the majestic 1833 m high Lyngen Alps. Along the eastern borders, rounded mountains and little silver lakes make for a wide horizon.

Towering heights in Troms

  • The Alpine Club of Troms has 650 km of marked tracks all over the county.
  • Mountains used to be trolls, but as they were surprised by the sun, they turned into rocks.
  • This explains the weird shape of many mountains.
  • Jiekkevarri is the highest mountain in Troms, rising 1833 m from the sea level.
  • Haldde/Halti is the highest moutain in Finland, but is more easily reached from Norway.
  • The "Devil's Jaw" is a rock formation on the outer coast of Senja.
  • Mount Tromsdalstind, 1238 m above sea level, towers over Tromsø.

Fjords and Towering Peaks

Blue fjords lined with green pastures and lush forests indent Troms. Towering mountains with glaciers, ravines, gushing rivers and deeply-cut valleys act as a protective barrier. Hikes, glacier walks and mountain bike rides lead the way around these breathtaking landscapes.

Distant Border Mountains

Wind-swept rounded mountains, a wide horizon and silent pine-clad valleys form the borderlands to Finland and Sweden. This is the area for week-long hikes crisscrossing borders without meeting a soul. In winter, use cross-country skis or dog sleds.
